Diamond Bar Friends of the Library

Feb 1, 2019

Los Angeles County Librarian Skye Patrick joined the Los Angeles County Library in February 2016. Since that time she has created new and innovative programs for one of the largest library systems in the United States with 87 library facilities serving 3.4 million people.

There is a strong, important future for libraries….Libraries are not about books, they are about people. We have to change how we serve and engage people," says Sky Patrick. "The library of the 21st century must build a high level of engagement with the community and all the people and be a constant learning environment both formally and informally." Los Angeles County is one of the most diverse in the nation. Patrick's efforts to eliminate barriers and increase access to services for her residents have had a huge impact. Her transformative work at the library, and her strategic approach to revolutionizing what we mean by inclusion in libraries earned her recognition as Library Journal's 2019 Librarian of the year.

Saturday, January 26 was a very festive evening for the Diamond Bar Friends of the Library. This was the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner where we present awards thank our volunteers for their dedication and service to the Friends and the Diamond Bar Library. We also welcomed our new Friends of the Library board headed by our new president, Susan Pantages.

Our 2018 Basically BOOKS volunteer is Harold Pressman. Harold has been an outstanding volunteer at Basically BOOKS on Golden Springs for several years. He is always ready to help out with any tasks that need doing. He is always so helpful and cheerful when welcoming our customers whether to find a special book or to haul in their donations. He is especially appreciated during our monthly Buck A Bag sale with setting up the many boxes, helping customers to their car or breaking down. He is a great representative for Basically BOOKS, always with a smile.

Our 2018 Jack and Kathleen Newe Volunteer of the Year is Helen Lin, our tremendous treasurer! A quote from Helen is that she very much appreciates the opportunity to work with the Friends to keep her skills honed and enjoy the social interaction. However, we are truly the ones who benefit from having Helen on our board and keeping us on the straight and narrow with our finances. Everything she does is thoughtful of the other volunteers and meticulous in her reports and procedures.

Our 2018 Jack and Eileen Tillery Organization of the Year is St. Denis Catholic Community in Diamond Bar. We were honored to have our acting pastor, Father John Palmer, with us to accept this award. St. Denis generously offered to host our book storage bin when we were anxiously look for a new home. We are eternally grateful to Father John and all the St. Denis parishioners for their generosity and support of the larger Diamond Bar community.

Outgoing President Glendy Chiang presented four President's Awards to Paula Block, Rosette Clippinger and Rachel and Roger Kirk. All four are long-time board members who are always ready to take on any task in support of the Friends. Paula and Rosette have chaired the Volunteer for many years along with many other events. Rachel is Chair of our popular Read Together Diamond Bar for many years. Roger has been our Parliamentarian and both have organized our very successful Book Silent Auction for many years at the Wine Soirée.
